Pinterest Publishing Guide: Boards, Creative, Links, and Video Pins
9 min read

A Pinterest workflow for connecting search intent, creative, board structure, destination quality, and verified publishing evidence.

Pinterest content often has a longer discovery life than a feed-first post. That makes board choice, visual clarity, destination quality, and durable wording more important than chasing a short-lived trend without relevance.

Current BlendDuck publishing contract

Every Pinterest publish requires exactly one image or one video. The caption or description supports up to 800 Unicode characters. A numeric destination board ID is required, while a numeric board section ID is optional.

A Pin may include an optional title of up to 100 characters and an optional destination link of up to 2,048 characters. Video Pins require a public cover image URL and must be between four seconds and five minutes in the current contract. Accepted video types include MP4, QuickTime, and M4V-compatible uploads.

Start with intent and destination

Define the question, project, product category, aspiration, or problem the Pin should help a user explore. Then choose the destination page. The page should fulfill the visual promise, load reliably on mobile, and preserve campaign parameters without redirect errors.

Choose the board before writing the copy. A relevant board gives the Pin durable context. Use a board section only when it improves organization rather than hiding the Pin inside an overly granular taxonomy.

The title should name the subject and payoff in plain language. The description can add context, differentiators, materials, steps, audience, season, or use case. Avoid keyword repetition that makes the copy unreadable; discovery language should still describe the actual destination.

Design creative for inspection

A Pin should communicate its subject quickly while rewarding closer inspection. Use readable hierarchy, strong contrast, and a crop that survives different placements. If text appears in the creative, make sure it adds information rather than duplicating the title word for word.

For a video Pin, show the result or subject early. Select a cover that represents the content honestly and remains useful without autoplay. Verify the public cover URL is stable and accessible before scheduling.

Record rights for photography, footage, typefaces, templates, music, product imagery, testimonials, and user-generated content. When linking to commerce or affiliate destinations, review applicable disclosure and claim requirements.

Approval and publishing checks

Bind approval to the creative version, title, description, board, section, link, and cover. A board change can alter context; a link change can alter the offer. Revalidate approval when the destination page or product availability changes.

Before publishing, test the final link, confirm HTTPS access, inspect tracking parameters, verify the board identity, and check the selected media. Keep provider acceptance separate from a verified live Pin, then save the public URL and inspect the rendered title, description, cover, and destination.

Measure durable discovery

Allow enough time for discovery before drawing conclusions. Match metrics to the Pin's job: outbound clicks, saves, product views, sign-ups, or assisted conversion. Compare similar topics, creative structures, boards, and measurement windows.

Record the intent phrase, board, creative pattern, destination type, outcome, and next test. Refresh a Pin when the destination or information changes; do not leave an attractive asset pointing to an expired or misleading page.
