Social media ROI compares the commercial value assigned to a defined activity with the cost required to produce and distribute it. The difficult work is not the formula. It is agreeing which costs and value belong in the model and how confident the team is in attribution.
The calculator below is a planning tool, not financial, accounting, tax, or attribution advice. Use the currency and measurement window appropriate to the business.
Define the decision and measurement window
State whether the model supports channel allocation, campaign review, agency scope, headcount, tooling, or an executive forecast. Record the period, accounts, campaigns, markets, organic and paid boundaries, and comparison case.
Do not combine long-term brand effects, immediate ecommerce revenue, customer support savings, and pipeline influence without explaining how each value was estimated.
Include the full cost base
Count internal labor, contractors, agency fees, tools, media, creator fees, production, rights, travel, training, data, and allocated overhead when relevant. Avoid counting the same cost twice across agency, labor, and production categories.
Use observed hours and invoices when possible. The operating-cost calculator can help establish a broader workflow baseline.
Separate attributed and assisted value
Attributed value is linked through the agreed model, such as tracked purchases, qualified leads, influenced opportunities, donations, bookings, retained customers, or service savings. Assisted value is plausible but less directly assigned.
Apply an explicit confidence percentage to assisted value rather than presenting it as certain. Preserve attribution windows, source systems, exclusions, consent boundaries, and known gaps.
Interpret ROI with operational evidence
Positive modeled ROI does not prove every post was efficient. Review delivery reliability, audience quality, content reuse, community load, risk, and opportunity cost. Negative short-term ROI may be expected for research or brand investment, but the decision should say how long that assumption remains acceptable.
ROI review checklist
- Decision, period, scope, comparison, and owner are explicit
- Labor, tools, media, creators, production, agency, and overhead are considered
- Attributed and assisted value use documented methods
- Confidence, attribution window, exclusions, and missing data are visible
- ROI is reviewed with non-financial and operational evidence
- Next budget or experiment decision has an owner and review date
