Social Media Manager Job Description Template: Outcomes, Skills, Interview, and 30-60-90 Plan

A useful job description defines the outcomes, decisions, support, and limits of the role instead of listing every platform and asking one person to do everything.

A social media manager job description should define the operating outcomes the organization needs and the authority, resources, and boundaries available to achieve them. Platform familiarity matters, but a list of networks is not a role design.

Define outcomes and scope

State the business context, audiences, channels, accounts, markets, content types, community coverage, campaigns, reporting, team structure, and first-year outcomes. Separate ownership from contribution and collaboration.

Clarify whether the role owns strategy, writing, design, video, publishing, community, paid media, influencer work, analytics, crisis response, tools, vendors, and budget. If one person cannot reasonably own the complete scope, name the supporting roles.

Describe authority and working conditions

Record approval authority, access level, escalation, incident duty, response expectations, schedule, location, travel, accessibility accommodations, manager, collaborators, compensation range, and development path. Do not hide permanent on-call work inside “must be passionate about social media.”

Include data, security, confidentiality, rights, disclosure, and brand responsibilities appropriate to the role.

Build a fair selection process

Separate essential skills from learnable preferences. Score candidates on evidence, audience judgment, writing, channel adaptation, prioritization, measurement, collaboration, risk recognition, and learning—not personal follower count or unpaid speculative production.

Use a bounded work sample based on fictional or sanitized information, provide the same instructions and time limit, compensate substantial work where appropriate, and do not publish candidate output.

Prepare the 30-60-90 plan

In 30 days, focus on access, audience, brand, workflow, evidence, risks, and relationships. By 60 days, own a bounded planning and publishing cycle. By 90 days, present learning, workflow improvements, and a measured next-quarter plan.

Job description checklist

  • Outcomes, audiences, scope, accounts, and first-year evidence are explicit
  • Strategy, creation, community, analytics, paid, and crisis boundaries are clear
  • Authority, support, schedule, compensation, and development are transparent
  • Essential skills are separated from preferences
  • Interview scorecard and work sample are consistent and job-relevant
  • 30-60-90 onboarding has owners, access, milestones, and feedback
